I have a 2000 GMC Sonoma with a 4 cylinder engine and manual transmission. I am getting a 16' equipment trailer to haul my BX23 on. The trailer will have electronic brakes on both axles. Do you think I could tow it with my little Sonoma? Don't have to tow it far.

Depending on the trailer weight, that is at least a 4200 pound total package.

If you have a hitch that is up to the load and the towing capacity of the truck meets or exceeds those numbers, you should be OK.

My truck manual says towing capacity if 2300#. Hard to believe that is all it will tow. You're right the total weight is appx. 4200#. With the brakes on the trailer stopping shouldn't be the problem, just a potential lack of power for takeoff. If I get it off the pavement I am sure it would not have enough power but on the road I think I could move it at say no more than 50mph? ....

A lot of times the towing capacity is limited by the capabilities of the transmission or clutch. The Ford Ranger, for example, tows quite a bit less with the stick than the automatic. ....

Yes, your truck has enough power to *pull* a trailer of that weight. You mentioned your trailer has brakes, so if you are not going very far or very fast you'll probably be okay. But... manufacturers determine a vehicle's towing capacity based on a host of factors and usually go with the lowest common denominator. Besides safety issues caused by overloading you always run the risk of breaking something.

The bottom line is: it's your truck, you make the call. ....

A 2300 pound towing capacity tells me that something in your drive train is built just to passenger car standards.

A relative had a full size Dodge pick-up that was rated to tow a twice what your truck will. Every time he took his 4500 pound travel trailer out for the weekend he would end up getting the automatic transmission rebuilt within a few weeks.

The tranny shop said it just built up too much heat and fried the fluid.

Be careful. It might be a lot cheaper to rent a u-haul truck at 20 bucks a day to haul your trailer than it would be to fix your abused broken lightweight truck. ....

Thanks, I think you are right. The clutch is the limiting factor in this case, it is very weak and I am sure I would have to really slip the clutch at every takeoff to get her going. Someone called my little truck once a "skirt truck" and I think in the case of towing he was right. ....
